Transferable Skills for a Career Change
Identify transferable evidence by comparing problems, decisions, stakeholders and outcomes—not relying on generic soft-skill lists.
The short answer
A skill is transferable when the target role needs a similar decision or outcome and you can show credible evidence from another context. “Communication” alone is too broad to prove transfer.
Transferability is specific. Influencing a regulator, calming an unhappy customer and presenting to a board all involve communication, but the stakes, constraints and evidence differ. Strong applications make the relevant similarity explicit.
A practical way to approach it
Compare work at the problem level
Ask what must be diagnosed, decided, coordinated or improved in both roles. Shared problems create stronger bridges than shared buzzwords.
Preserve context and outcome
Evidence needs enough detail to be credible: who was involved, what made it difficult, what you did and what changed.
Name the remaining gap
Transferable evidence does not eliminate every learning need. Acknowledging a bounded domain or technical gap makes the plan more trustworthy.
From generic skill to transferable evidence
Turn projects and achievements into a reusable evidence library for future applications.
Build your evidenceChecklist
- List the target role’s five recurring decisions
- Find one past example for each
- Describe stakes and constraints
- Quantify the outcome where possible
- State what changes in the new context
- Identify the one or two gaps that require learning
Common mistakes
- Listing communication, teamwork and leadership without proof
- Claiming every experience transfers equally
- Removing the original context until the example becomes vague
- Ignoring technical or regulated requirements
Questions people ask
What are the most transferable skills?
There is no universal ranking. Analytical judgement, delivery, influence and learning often travel well, but only when the target work needs the same kind of capability.
How do I show transferable skills on a CV?
Place the relevant outcome and decision in achievement bullets, then use the summary to explain the direction of travel.
Can volunteering count as evidence?
Yes when the responsibility and result are genuine. Describe it accurately and do not inflate informal activity into employment.
